Ghanaian gospel singer and songwriter Piesie Esther, has been named the “Gospel Artist of the Year” at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). The annual music award ceremony, which held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre, is highly regarded in the country for recognizing exceptional artistic feats.
Piesie Esther was recognized for her hit single “Waye Me Yie,” translated as “He Has Been Good To Me,” for which she also won “Gospel Song of the Year.” The talented vocalist and songwriter had been nominated in seven major categories, including Artiste of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year.
Following her win, Piesie Esther expressed her gratitude on Instagram, dedicating the awards to God, her husband, the Church of Pentecost, the Ghanaian Christian community, and everyone who has been part of her growth over the past 20 years.
She wrote, “Waye me yie ampa! I dedicate these awards firstly to God, my dear husband (God of Enoch), my family, The Church Of Pentecost, @thecophqofficial, the entire Christian Community in Ghana, my team at Gospel 360 Africa, The table of Men, the Media, Bloggers, and to everyone who has been a part of the growth of my ministry. God Bless You All.”
The VGMA nomination process involves the GMA Board sending out a blank list of categories and definitions to industry practitioners across all regions of Ghana, including radio station regional offices, and major music distributors for nominations in various categories.
Other winners in the Gospel category include Joe Mettle, who won the “Male Vocalist of the Year” award, and Ewurama, who won the “Discovery of the Year” award.
The VGMA Awards recognize and celebrate the achievements of Ghanaian musicians who have excelled in their various music genres, including Highlife, Gospel, Hiplife, Hip-hop, Reggae/Dancehall, and Afro-pop. This year’s ceremony saw performances from some of Ghana’s top musicians, including Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy.
