Onyekachi Elizabeth Gilbert Onwuka, professionally known as Yeka Onka, is a Nigerian singer, and songwriter. She was born and raised in Abia state, Nigeria, and has five siblings. She rose to fame after winning the Nigerian Idol in 2011. Since then, she has been winning hearts for Christ through her music.

In a recent interview, Yeka shared the story of her journey from secular music to gospel music. She revealed that a few years ago she haad gone on a three-month retreat to discover her purpose on earth, and that experience led her to embrace gospel music.

The singer said she was intentional about her decision to switch to gospel music, adding that God deposited a sound in her soul and gave her the drive to do everything. She also revealed that she is currently working on an album and writing a book, as she plans to release more live worship sessions to impact more lives.

Yeka stressed that her biggest success so far has been the decision to let God mold her into a vessel He can use for His glory. She said she owes her success to the direction and influence of the Holy Spirit, as well as her mentors, including Pastor Jerry, Pastor Eno, Pastors Godstime and Joyce Pender, and her adopted mother, Rev Mo’tolani Abike and Pastor Stacy Egbo.

The singer also talked about her childhood memories growing up in a rural area in Nigeria. She described it as a beautiful environment where people lived like one big happy family, and the children were free to eat and play at their neighbor’s houses.

Reflecting on the current state of the music industry, Yeka said she believes the industry is doing better, and that it is a lot easier now with the advent of social media. She added that social media has brought everybody into a common village with unfettered access to diverse unique sounds from different tribes.

Yeka’s story is an inspiration to many, and her journey from secular music to gospel music is a reminder that anyone can find their purpose in life and use their talents for God’s glory.
